Being jobless and divorced at age forty-five is bad enough. But when Val Fremden’s only friend in the world ends up dead, it’s hard not to think the world’s out to get her.

Maybe it is….

The sugar-white sands of St. Pete Beach attract weirdos like mosquitoes to a bug zapper. So when the will of Val’s friend is announced in the paper, loonies scramble out of their beach shacks vying for a piece of the leftover pie.

Determined to find her friend’s true heir, Val reluctantly turns to three crackpots for help – a drunk, a redneck, and a snarky beach bum. Working at odds with each other, their bumbling investigation attracts the attention of a hot cop. He quickly gets into the fray and under Val’s skin. Whether it’s in a good way or bad only time will tell.

If you love funny, hard-to-solve mysteries that put gaffs over gore and laughs over legalese, the Val Fremden Mystery Series is for you! Part Bridget Jones, part My Name is Earl, each book in the series is packed with crazy characters, zingy dialogue, hilarious similes and rip-roaring situational humor, making them a laugh a minute!

Often compared by readers to Janet Evanovich’s Stephanie Plum, Margaret Lashley’s character, Val Fremden, is a bit older, a tad more jaded, and a ton more experienced in big-time failure. Life’s been tough for Val. Still, she always manages to find her way with sardonic humor and an intrepid spirit. A gin and tonic now and then helps, too.

Life’s a beach and then you die. If you’re ready for a good laugh and a great mystery, check out Glad One and its crazy cast of characters today!

P.S. If you love humorous, page-turning mysteries like those by Karen Cantwell, Tara Sivec, Liliana Hart, Libby Howard, Chelsea Field, Jana Deleon, Gina LaManna, Janet Evanovich, Denise Grover Swank, Amy Vansant, and Stephanie Bond, you just might love Glad One, too!

While reading, I was reminding myself to make a comment about the fact that likening any author to Janet Evanovich is not a good thing to do. It sets up the reader for something truly outstanding (this is not, IMHO) and with expectations high, it's easy to be disappointed. There are plenty of Evanovich wannabees out there, but very few come anywhere close. The Stephanie Plum series set a spectacularly high bar, and so far no-one else (that I know of) has come near. Sorry guys, Evanovich got there first, and she nailed it. Frankly, I'm sick of finding myself in the middle of another poor imitation. So, anyone who likens an author to Evanovich is really doing them a dis-service, in my opinion. Then to my shock, at one point, this author actually had an incredibly unlikely character liken the MC to Stephanie Plum! Way too much of a stretch on all levels. Then later on, yet another extremely unlikely character (as in: would never be mistaken for someone who might know who she is) likens her again to 'Miss Plum'. I was rolling my eyes by then, and not only because of that sacrilege. This is just tsunami of non-stop puns and 'trying way too hard to be funny' similes. I honestly haven't laughed once. Being bombarded with said similes and puns just doesn't work for me (unless they're actually funny). There were a few amusing ones early in, but then they become so tired that they kind of ruin any kind of plot direction. I felt like giving up pretty quickly with this one. The dialogue suffers because of it. The characters lose credibility, and any empathy you might feel for them. And speaking of empathy, I began to dislike the main character pretty quickly, and it went steadily downhill from there. She just isn't particularly likeable, and the people who have rallied to help her with her unlikely quest, seem to be mostly held in contempt by her. Plus, one ongoing 'gag' is the protagonist's surname. It's supposed to mean stranger in German, but it actually means strangers (plural). Kind of messes up all the supposed humour built around it if you know that. Sorry. Just can't understand all of those 5 stars.

Glad One Crazy is a Relative Term A Val Fremden Humorous Mystery Book 1 edition by Margaret Lashley Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

The tone of the book is manic, reminiscent of a bright Hawaiian shirt. I also wonder if it included plugs for commercial items, like Mounds bars or Mountain Dew. It kept me entertained but it was somewhat judgmental towards certain people, while the main character was really the same as the people she was confounded by hanging out with. I don't know why she had to describe certain characters as Hispanic, a broad term. Can they not just be human? Racism is a grand pet peeve of mine as is classism and many books include those attributes. The ending was somewhat expected yet far fetched. Also the main character kept complaining about hot weather in Florida. What's the point? Some people still do enjoy hot weather.
I've read mixed reviews on this book, but found myself staying up way too late two nights in a row just to finish this hilarious book! Yes, the rednecks are a bit over-the-top, and sometimes the humor is a stretch, but I'd read it again in a heartbeat because it's just really funny! And I loved Glad and the introductory chapter. Her attitude was a breath of fresh air, even if it was salt air, and by the time I finished the book, I realized what it had taken Glad to evolve into the person she had become. This book is exactly what it's meant to be--a hilarious, touching, funny, sometimes down-to-earth look at the places we find ourselves, the many ways we can so easily lose ourselves, and the unexpected places where we can find true friendships. Read and enjoy!
Fun, fast read that held my attention. I loved the 40 something Val who was recreating herself for the fourth time. Each time she started with near nothing and pulled herself out of the funk. The supporting characters were all very colorful and always supportive of her. Must read for anyone frustrated and ready to give up on the next new chapter of life.
I enjoyed this story so very much. Yes, there was a bit of romance, but no heavy sexual tones. It was truly a work of searching from one clue to another. I certainly did not know the conclusion anytime the final pages. Val became a one woman tornado to do right for her friend. The three stooges were perfect for the back ground and the sexy cop so good to help when he was needed. Thank you Margaret for writing a real winner.
Valient aka "Val" is a mess. We meet Val in her late 40's and back in her native Florida after a decade abroad in Europe. Val is at her lowest with a 3rd (count 'em, folks) marriage blown to smithereens. Val is restarting her life again and draws inspiration from a fellow beach bum name Glad. I thoroughly enjoyed this book because the mystery is a good one without unnecessary action scenes. Plus in spite of the mistakes Val has made, she still soldiers on and learns. I am very happy the heroine a mature woman with a messy life - like real life! I will read the next book. I received a free copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.
What a story ! totally unbelievable, but life can be like that. If it weren't for the rather mean words about the psychiatric clinic, I would have given it 5 stars. But sometimes this writer goes too far, and becomes vulgar. From hobos one can expect that language. But the main character, Val, is supposed to be educated... nevertheless, a good read and a lot of fun.
This book had a very high rating on Goodreads so I gave it a try. It was billed as being funny as Stephanie Plum. It wasn’t that funny—well maybe as funny as the newer Stephanie Plum novels which aren’t nearly as funny as the first few. The book was a quick read and doesn’t require too much attention. There aren’t a million characters to keep track of and the story was easy to follow. It was an enjoyable, quick read. It’s a perfect beach book.
